The new health care law expands health insurance with more benefits for more people and more affordable coverage. If you do not have health care coverage through an employer because you work part-time, are unemployed or self-employed, you can buy your own insurance. This is called individual health insurance, which can be purchased for yourself or your entire family.
All of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield® of Illinois plans follow the Affordable Care Act guidelines and provide the same set of essential health benefits, quality and amount of care. The differences are how much your premium costs each month, what portion of the bill you pay for things like hospital visits or prescription medications, and how much your total out-of-pocket costs are.
Plans offered by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois are the same if you purchase through United Insurance Services or if you shop on the Health Insurance Marketplace. If you want to explore money-saving premium tax credits or other ways to get help paying for health insurance, you will need to check your eligibility with the federal government. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois also offers other plans not available on the Marketplace. Once you have your eligibility with the federal government determined, you can complete your enrollment with us quickly and easily.

Catastrophic health care plans are available for people under 30 and to some low-income people. A catastrophic health insurance plan has a lower premium than other health plans, but has a high deductible. It is meant to serve as a "safety net" to cover large medical costs in case of a serious illness or injury.
Costs vary by deductible, coinsurance, copayment, out-of-pocket expenses. Some plans qualify for a cost-sharing discount which can lower your monthly costs. Cost sharing discounts vary by plan, income level and Native American status. Call us at 1-800-244-0636 for details.
